Who is that guy?
From 2013 to 2024 I was Art Director at The Age newspaper in Melbourne, Australia, but let’s backtrack a little …
Upon graduating in 1994 from Swinburne Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Arts (Graphic Design), my first industry job was … at The Age, where I worked for several years. After a decade or so knocking around in small graphic design agencies, digital advertising, custom publishing, copywriting and freelancing, in 2011 I found myself back home in my native environment - newspapers. In the years that followed my work has been awarded, both nationally and internationally, numerous times, including a nomination in 2025, at SND46, for World’s Best Designer. You will find all of my awarded work here on this site.
There are not a great many places where somebody whose interests (and abilities) lie at the intersection of words and images can find job satisfaction. You usually find yourself dealing with one or the other. I guess I’ve been lucky winding up where I did. The majority of the headlines you see here are mine, along with the illustrations, with the finished pieces themselves more often than not banged out in a few hours, from conception to completion. Deadlines, what can I say?
As a lover of film, art, design and literature I’m a believer in the symbiotic relationship between words and images, that they are stronger working together than when treated as separate entities as they so often are, especially in the online world in which we all find ourselves living.
Hopefully that comes across. I like to think I give it a red hot go.
